CrossFit Games Athlete Dies in Texas Lake During Swimming Event

Tragic Loss at 2024 Games

Austin, Texas - August 10, 2024

A CrossFit Games athlete died during a swimming event in a Texas lake on Thursday. The athlete, identified as 32-year-old Karol Denis Zub, was competing in the 2024 CrossFit Games, an annual competition that tests the fitness of athletes from around the world.

Zub was swimming in Lake Austin during the CrossFit Games Open Water Swim event when he disappeared underwater. Rescuers were called to the scene and recovered Zub's body approximately an hour later.

The CrossFit Games released a statement expressing their condolences to Zub's family and friends. "We are deeply saddened by the loss of Karol Denis Zub, a talented athlete and valued member of the CrossFit community. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and loved ones during this difficult time."

The CrossFit Games are currently underway in Madison, Wisconsin, and will conclude on Sunday, August 13. The competition features over 1,000 athletes from over 30 countries.

Zub's death is a reminder of the dangers of open water swimming, even for experienced athletes. CrossFit Games athletes are known for their extreme fitness levels, but they are still subject to the same risks as any other swimmer.

The CrossFit Games will continue as scheduled, but the tragedy of Zub's death will undoubtedly cast a shadow over the competition.
