The American League Central race is heating up: Guardians' lead down to one
Cleveland drops doubleheader, while Minnesota wins one
The Cleveland Guardians, who led the American League Central by 11.5 games on June 14, faced a tough doubleheader against the Kansas City Royals on Monday. They were one game short of winning a season-high fifth straight game and extending their division lead to 12.5 games. The Guardians, who had won eight of their previous 10 games, were swept by the Royals, who were at the bottom of the division.
The Guardians now have just a one-game lead over the Minnesota Twins, who won a doubleheader against the Chicago Cubs on Sunday.
The race for the AL Central is far from over
The Guardians still have a comfortable lead, but the Twins are playing well and could make a run at the division title. The Twins have won five of their last six games and are 10-6 in their last 16 games.
The Guardians and Twins have nine games remaining against each other, and the Guardians also have a three-game series against the Chicago White Sox, who are in third place in the division. If the Twins continue to play well and the Guardians stumble, the Twins could win the AL Central and knock the Guardians out of the playoffs.
